Wirral

Introducing Wirral u3a
Wirral u3a is part of the Third Age Trust which is a national movement for retired and semi-retired people who are keen to carry on learning and sharing knowledge as well as making new friends in a wide range of interest groups. We use the motto: learn, laugh, live.

The movement is based on one which originated in France in 1973 with the first British u3a starting in 1982. Wirral U3A was established in 1985. Following an exploratory meeting at the Indonesian Restaurant in West Kirby on 25th July our first meeting was held on the 3rd October at the British Legion in Moreton. Subsequent meetings took place in various venues around the Wirral. It was so successful a number of other local groups were formed.

In 2025 we celebrated our 40th anniversary. You can read about our anniversary dinner in the News section.

Where do meet?
We meet at the UPTON VICTORY HALL TENNIS AND BOWLS CLUB, Rake Lane, CH49 0US, which is off Ford Road in Upton (look for the Eagle and Crown Pub). Access to the building is down Rake Lane. Half way down the lane, on the left (opposite no 28) are some large green gates and a sign for the Tennis Club. Turn left through the gates and into the car park. There is plenty of parking. The venue is also accessible by buses 437, 423 and 414.
Please take care not to confuse our meeting venue with the Upton Victory Hall which is close by.

How do we operate?
We meet throughout the year (with a break in July and August and at Christmas) every other Monday morning at 10.00am when we usually have a guest speaker. Please see under 'Events' for a list of speakers. Before the speaker begins at 10.45am, there is time for a cup of tea and to browse the information board to see which groups are running and what events/trips are being organised. There are leisure and informative visits and theatre trips along with a number of wide ranging interest groups (look on the Groups page for more information).
How much does it cost?
Our annual fee is just £10 with meetings costing £3.00 a visit. Membership entitles you to:

  • attend the Monday meetings
  • join as many of our interest groups as you wish as long as there is space available
  • receive the Third Age Matters magazine (one copy per household)
  • access the Third Age Trust resources via the website

Want to know more?
Not yet a member and wondering what it's all about? You are welcome to turn up at any meeting as a guest to listen to the speaker and to talk to members to learn about what we do.

George explained why he joined Wirral u3a on retiring after a long career in public service.  ‘I was looking for a new interest. I enjoy the Monday lectures and I’ve found companionship.’

For Lesley it was a desire to link up with people, who, like her, have lots of different interests. Her main involvement is the Spanish Group, spurred on by her daughter moving to live in Peru.

Joan comes over from Liverpool since the timing of our meetings fit better with other demands on her daily life. A plus of joining has been making new friends. She particularly likes the meetings being held every two weeks - if you have to miss one it is not too long until the next one.

Val returned to live on the Wirral after 50 years. She wanted to keep the brain stimulated and meet people. She received a warm welcome, made new friends and learned some interesting facts from the diverse speakers at the meetings.

Marg joined with her husband. She remembers the warm and friendly welcome. She enjoys the good company - plus the opportunity that u3a provides of exploring interests - old and new.
