First Responders
Community First Responders are local volunteers dispatched by ambulance services to give early care, like CPR before an ambulance arrives. They can stabilize a patient and stop immediate harm, evaluate hazards and co-ordinate with other emergency groups. They have specialised training that requires certification in CPR, First Aid, crisis response and safety protocols.

Tins, Tubes and Tenacity: Survival in WWII Far East captivity

Using extracts from her oral history study interviews with British veterans of Far East captivity under the Japanese, and illustrating the talk with examples of secret, hidden artworks recording the myriad ways men survived to return home, Meg will share some of the extraordinary feats of medical ingenuity she has researched over the past 20 years working with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

Lairds Vessels of the Victorian period and Connections with the Peruvian Navy

In the 19th-century Laird Brothers (which eventually became Camell Lairds) built for the Peruvian Navy the ironclad Huáscar which had innovative features for the time, such as revolving gun turrets. This boat still survives today. Jerry, who is a Wirral Council member for Upton ward, is a long serving Wirral Heritage Champion and will tell us not only about the Huascar but also about other Naval vessels Lairds built.

Drive Safely for Longer

Kathy works for the Wirral Council Road Safety Team. She will run a workshop which includes lots of useful information on how to stay safe on the roads. It is an informal session where we are asked to share experiences and solutions to the issues people maybe experiencing as we enter an older age group.

Florence Nightingale: Nurse, Reformer Feminist and Statistician

Many people only know of Florence Nightingale as “The Lady with the Lamp” from her work as a nurse during The Crimean War. However, there is so much more to Florence which we will explore in this talk.

We meet every other Monday, except for a break from mid-July to the beginning of September and a short break over Christmas and New Year. Our current meeting venue is the Upton Victory Hall Tennis and Bowls Club which is off Rake Lane, Upton Village, CH49 0US. Tea and coffee are served at 10.00am when there is time to look at the groups/events notice board or catch up on any gossip before our speaker at 10.45am. Details of speakers and their topics are shown below the picture. Please note that our last meeting before Christmas and the last one of the season does not have a speaker but an enjoyable entertainment programme organised by the Social Group.
There is a small charge (£3) for attending the Monday meeting. The membership fee remains at £10. When you pay your annual subscription you will be asked to confirm your personal details.
At the start of each meeting is a raffle organised by the social committee. The proceeds of this go towards subsidising the Anniversary lunch. It also pays for the entertainment at our last meeting before Christmas and the one before the summer break in July.
